Matchbox Brothers is based upon my Grandfather’s passion for Phillumeny. An album which I inherited from him served as inspiration for this work of fiction and its illustrations. The album covers a period from approximately 1945-1960. The imagery is interesting as it combines Polish culture with that of Socialist Realism.
The illustrations are derived from the tension between these two types of image, and taken through a process of collage making. In subsequent drawings elements about each culture exist in parallel, forming their own new narrative. They attempt to combine the grittiness of life under a restrictive regime with the visual stimuli of day to day life. Subjects as varied in theme as state institutions and the rustic, the astronomical and the pastoral, the domestic and the urban are all touched upon.
